GCSE

Years 10–11 (ages 14–16)

The qualification employers and sixth forms ask for first

GCSE grades decide which A-Level courses you can take, which apprenticeships you qualify for, and whether you meet English and Maths requirements for work and further study.

  • Grade 4+ in English Language and Maths — required by most employers and colleges
  • 5+ GCSEs at grade 4–9 for competitive sixth-form A-Level programmes
  • Separate science GCSEs (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) for medicine, dentistry, and engineering
  • Strong grades in Maths + Sciences for STEM A-Levels and degree routes

Subject focus: Core GCSEs: English, Maths, and at least two sciences. Add History, Geography, or a language for Russell Group “facilitating subjects”.

Year 12 & 13

A-Level

Years 12–13 (ages 16–18)

What universities and degree apprenticeships use to make offers

A-Level results (predicted and final) drive UCAS offers. The subjects you pick in Year 12 shape medicine, law, engineering, and other competitive courses.

  • Three A-Levels (sometimes four) — typical offer is AAB–AAA for top courses
  • Facilitating subjects (Maths, Further Maths, sciences, English Literature, History, languages) keep options open
  • Medicine and dentistry: Chemistry + Biology/Maths, plus UCAT and work experience
  • Engineering: Maths + Physics (+ Further Maths where offered)

Subject focus: Pick A-Levels that match your target degree — check university course pages early in Year 12.

Years 10–11 equivalent

IGCSE

International & UK independent schools

International equivalent of GCSE — recognised for sixth form worldwide

IGCSEs from Cambridge or Edexcel International are taken in international and independent schools and feed into A-Level, IB DP, or national pathways abroad.

  • Cambridge IGCSE A*–G or 9–1 grading depending on board and school
  • English Language + Maths + Sciences for university foundation routes
  • Often taken alongside or instead of UK GCSE when relocating internationally

Subject focus: Match your school’s Cambridge or Edexcel International specification — core English, Maths, and sciences first.

Years 7–9

KS3

Years 7–9 (ages 11–14)

Build exam habits before GCSE pressure starts

Years 7–9 set the foundation for GCSE choices. Fixing gaps in algebra, writing, and scientific method early prevents grade ceilings later.

  • End-of-KS3 assessments inform GCSE set decisions (Higher vs Foundation)
  • Strong KS3 Maths predicts GCSE tier and A-Level eligibility
  • School reporting: Working towards / Secure / Mastered — track trends, not just snapshots

Subject focus: Maths, English, and Science carry the most weight for later GCSE and career STEM routes.

S5 & S6

Scottish Highers

S5–S6 Scotland (ages 16–18)

Scotland’s main route from S5 into university or HNC/HND

SQA Highers (graded A–D) are what Scottish universities quote in entry requirements. Advanced Highers add depth for competitive courses.

  • Typically 5 Highers in S5; universities often ask for BBBB or better
  • Advanced Highers in S6 for competitive degrees (medicine, law, STEM)
  • Different UCAS tariff from A-Levels — check ScotGEM and Scottish uni pages

Subject focus: Higher Maths, English, and sciences for STEM; Business Management and social subjects for commerce routes.

MYP Years 1–5

IB MYP

IB Middle Years Programme (ages 11–16)

Criteria-based skills before the IB Diploma

MYP (ages 11–16) develops inquiry and interdisciplinary skills assessed on IB criteria levels 1–7 — preparation for IB DP or A-Level elsewhere.

  • Personal Project in MYP Year 5 — practice for DP Extended Essay
  • Language & Literature + Language Acquisition for bilingual pathways
  • Sciences and Individuals & Societies for DP subject group choices

Subject focus: MYP subject groups map directly to IB DP groups — choose strengths that align with intended DP HL subjects.

DP Years 1–2

IB DP

IB Diploma Programme (ages 16–19)

Global diploma — 1–7 per subject plus TOK, EE, and CAS

IB DP scores (out of 45) are used for university offers worldwide. HL subject choices matter as much as UK A-Levels for competitive courses.

  • Six subjects: three Higher Level (HL), three Standard Level (SL)
  • Medicine: Chemistry HL + Biology HL + Maths/Physics HL typical
  • 38+ points competitive for top UK unis; check course-specific HL requirements
  • Extended Essay and TOK contribute up to 3 bonus points

Subject focus: Maths AA vs AI, sciences HL, and Economics/Business for finance routes — align HL picks with degree prerequisites.
